INDIA 2050: EYEING THE GROWTH POTENTIAL

13-14 March, 2009

India has emerged from being a poor, backward, highly bureaucratized, not so efficient nation to one that is much more dynamic and youthful and holds great promise and potential for the future. Optimistic outlook place her even ahead of the US by 2050. This optimism is not a mere conjecture but is based on sound economic rationale and empirical facts. Even when the world is facing an economic gloom, India seems to be fairly insulated. But, this vision of a rising India is not without challenges. Interpersonal, inter-sectoral and inter-regional inequalities of income are still rising. There are concerns that we may not be able to meet our Millennium Development Goals on time. The entire issue of sustainable development is also of paramount importance. The question we are posing is whether India can prove her capabilities amidst these constraints and keep her date with 2050. Experts from various fields were invited to present their views on these issues so that we can understand India’s place in the world economy better, a few decades from now.
