The Department organized various lectures and competitions for the students throughout the year. Prof. Bhan from the Meteorology Department, IMD, Lodhi Road gave a very informative lecture on “General cCirculation and its impact on Indian monsoon” on 11th November 2008. Dr. V.A.V Raman, Reader from Bhagat Singh College, Delhi University gave a lecture on “Applied Geomorphology” on 6th February 2009. Dr. P.K. Champati Ray, Head, Geosciences Division, SAARC Disaster Management Centre, New Delhi delivered a lecture on “Climate change and its impact on mass movements” on the 18th of February, 2009 in the Department under the AGS lecture series. Mr. Rohit Jain from the company, MatrixG had an interactive session with the students on careers in Geography focussing on GIS and Remote Sensing on 17th March 2009. The department also organized a poster competition on ‘Climate change” in the college on 29th September 2009. These will be later exhibited in India International Centre for public viewing.
With the new academic session that began in July 2009, the Department got busy in the organization of the first International Youth Forum on “Sustainable lifestyles: consumption and climate change.” The student coordinator for the conference was Ms. Zoya Sodhi. The conference was sponsored by the UGC, the Ministry of Environment and Forest, Crafts Council of U.P. and the British Council. Our knowledge partners for the conference were GEF- UNDP and Centre for Environment Education. The conference took place from 3rd August to 7th August in the college auditorium. It was well attended by students from various colleges of Delhi, some international (U.K., Nigeria, Greece, Nepal and Germany) and national universities. The sessions focused on Carbon Footprints and Carbon Handprints Action towards sustainability, sustainable consumption, increased use of plastic, consumer choices and water pollution.
The Department conducted elections for the new office bearers of the Geography Association. Ms. Shikha (III year) is the President, Ms. Mariam (II year) is the Treasurer and Ms. Deepshikha (I year) is the Secretary.
Two senior teachers oft the Department, Mrs. Bharti Dave and Mrs. Ranjana Gera, have been awarded with doctorate degrees from Punjab University and Jamia Millia Islamia respectively. Dr. Nitasha Malhotra of the Department has also, for the first time, registered as a Ph.D student of the Department of Geography, University Of Delhi. She will be working in the field of Medical Geography to study the epidemiology of respiratory diseases in Delhi.
A study tour was also conducted to Himachal Pradesh (Chail) for the second year students of the Department from 7th September to 10th September. They were accompanied by Dr. Nitasha Malhotra and Ms. Azka Kamil. The objective of the tour was to study the change in agricultural patterns, development of tourism industry and afforestation programmes run by local panchayats to earn carbon credits. Several heritage buildings were also visited by the students.
Ms. Gargi and Ms. Akriti have joined the Department in teaching positions for the current session.
