Department of History Report -2010-11 The Department began the new academic session with an Orientation program that included introduction of faculty members, understanding of internal assessment system, attendance rules and regulations, general conduct, making best use of library and computer facilities in the institution and the Fresher welcome by the seniors. It was followed by the election of student representatives of History Association on August 5th 2010. On November 29th, 2010, Prof. Farhat Hasan delivered a lecture on ‘The Historiography of 18th century India’. On January 29th, 2011, the Department of History organized an informal interactive session with the students pursuing Indian Art history from Saint Olef College, University of Minnesota, USA. The students exchanged their views on wide range of subjects. This year was immensely exciting for the students in terms of excursions and trips: The students visited National Museum and National Gallery of Modern Art,
The department organized screening of two films, 'Gandhi' and 'Seven Samurai' followed by interactive session. To mark the birth centenary of the Urdu poet of the global significance, Faiz Ahmed Faiz, a one-day festival ‘Zikr-e-Faiz’ was organized in collaboration with Indian Music society Sangeetika on March 28th, 2011. Mahmood Farooqui and Danish Hussain presented a dialogical performance on the life and poetry of Faiz. This was followed by the musical performance by Dr. Madan Gopal Singh and his accompanists Dr. Singh sang various traditional and modern compositions including those of Faiz keeping in view the context in which Faiz’s poetry evolved. The series of events came to the climax with the farewell given to the students on April 15th, 2011.
Report: 2011-2012 The Department of History had a varied set of activities since April 2011. On the 15th April 2011, the department organised an interactive session for the final year students to discuss their experience in college and their future aims. Soon after the re-opening of college for its new academic year, the department organised an Orientation Programme for the first year students’ on the 28th July 2011, to make them aware of their under-graduate curriculum. In the following month, on the 9th August 2011, an interactive session for all three year students was organised by the department so that they get a chance to know one another. During this event, students’ election to elect class representatives and History Association office-bearers took place. The class representatives elected were Hakima (III year), Shubhi (II year), and Shivanjali (I year). The elected office-bearers of History Association are Monica as President, Girija as Secretary, and Zainab as Treasurer. A guest lecture was organised on the 2nd September 2011, where Mrs. Neeru Ailawadi spoke on the “Role of Women in French Revolution”. On January 2012 a guest lecture was organised where Prof. Philip Housey of New York University spoke on “Contemporary Issues of American Society and Culture”. A series of historical walks were organised for students by the teachers of the department. On 14th January 2012, Dr. Archana Ojha and Shubhra Sinha took the History (hons) II year students to the Qutb Complex. In the following month, on 18th February 2012, a study tour to the Nizamuddin Dargah and Humayun’s tomb was organised by Dr. Archana Ojha and Shubhra Sinha for History (hons) III year students. In the same month Dr. Archana Ojha conducted a historical trip to Masjid Moth where students of History (hons) III year were given the opportunity yet again to enrich their knowledge about the various monuments in Delhi. The last of the historical walks was conducted by Shubhra Sinha on 1st March 2012 where B.A. (prog.) II year students were taken to the Qutub Complex. The month of March 2012 also saw more activities conducted by the department. A guest lecture took place on 1st March 2012 where Dr. Nishat Manzar of Jamia Millia Islamia University spoke to the students of III year History (hons.) on the topic of “Sufism in India – the Chishti and Naqshbandi Silsila”. In line with the department program to screen movies with historical significance, “The Great Dictator” was screened on 3rd March 2012 which was an open-house event where not only history students but students from various other disciplines enjoyed the screening. The department was also involved with the larger activities of the college. As the college festival’s theme for the year 2012 was “Delhi”, department teachers and students contributed to the “Delhi Exhibition” that was put up by the Fine Arts Society. The students of the department have also been active in putting up important themes and topics of history on the History Wall paper. Over this last one year diverse important historical topics such as, Medieval Women Bhaktas, Mughal Art and Architecture and Gupta Dynasty have graced the History Wall paper. We thus had a very active and an exciting year 2011-2012.
