Department Activities

At the Mathematics Association we aspire to provide the best exposure to areas of Mathematics outside the general curriculum through projects, talks and discussions by eminent personalities working in the field of Mathematics.

For the academic year 2007-2008 the Association focused on the theme “Mathematics and Environment” and the inaugural meet was addressed by Dr. Prashant Gargav of the Central Pollution Control Board. His captivating talk brought forth the subtle and intricate use of Mathematical concepts in Environmental Sciences. An inter-class paper-reading contest and a poster competition was also held on “Mathematics and Space” wherein students presented diligently-researched papers that were not only informative but captured the awe and wonder inherent in space. The posters manifested plural interpretations of the subject.

December 2007 was the time for Brain-O-Matics, the annual festival of the department. The day began with a very enlightening talk by Dr. B. Mukhopadhayay, Director, Environmental Monitoring and Research Centre in the Department of Metereology. This was followed by an inter-college paper-presentation competition on “Mathematics and Environment. Dr. Y.P. Yadav, former head of the Mathematics Department, University of Delhi and Dr. Debdatta Basu, Senior Scientist, Central Pollution Control Board were the honourable judges. A presentation by Alpha plus Education on Actuarial Sciences concluded the morning session. The Mathematical Tambola dominated the informal events.

Mouth-watering snacks at the food stalls, colourful garments and costumes, jewellery at the other stalls plus the hot pop-corns and chat were a real feast besides adding a lot of colour to the festival.
