DEPARTMENT OF PSYCHOLOGY

REPORT-2010-11 

L’Esprit, the Psychology Association of Kamala Nehru College is a very active association, organizing various seminars and activities for its students. The academic year 2010-11 started with an informal orientation program for the freshers . This was followed by screening  of “A Beautiful Mind”  to educate the students about schizophrenia and increase its awareness.

Every year the department organizes some certificate course to add value to the degree in psychology. This year the students were offered  a course in 'Cognitive Behaviour Therapy'  . It was conducted by mental health professionals i.e.  psychologists and psychiatrists , from Department of Mental Health and Behavioral Sciences, Max Healthcare under the guidance of Dr. Samir Parikh (Chief  Consultant Psychiatrist).

In  December,2010 an interactive and participative session was conducted by Sanjivini- Society for Mental Health. The main speakers were Ms. Arvinder J. Singh (Psychotherapist), Mr. Kirti Jamwal (Head of the Rehabilitation Center) and Ms, Madhu who talked about their services at Sanjivini and spread awareness on various mental and emotional health issues.

The department had its annual fest “Psychogenesis” in  January 2011. The annual newsletter “Unhinged” was released.  The fest continued with a panel discussion on Hypnosis: A Therapeutic Technique conducted by Mrs. Simrita Chaudhary-Clinical Hypnotherapist Coordinator, Mind and Body Centre, VIMHANS, Dr. Anshu Kumar- Practising Hypnotherapist and Ms. Hala Hussain-Clinical Psychologist, Max Hospital). This was followed by various competitive activities for the students. We received a great participation from other colleges and departments. Attractive cash prizes were given. The event was a huge success.

The students were visited by Mr. Craig Hines from the Adler School of Psychology in February 2011 for an informative session on education in U.S.A, emphasizing on application process, courses offered, eligibility and the scope of psychology.

An educational trip to Dehradun was organized for the final year students in  March 2011. The students visited RAPHAEL- a non profitable charitable institution that extends rehabilitation facilities for leprosy patients;special educational opportunities for children with intellectual and physical disabilities and  those with learning disabilities. It was an insightful experience for the students ..

Apart from the above,the students have been attending workshops and participating in various academic and competitive activities in other colleges.

  

 

Report-2011-2012

The year 2011-2012 has been an eventful year for the department of sociology in all its ventures with the active participation of the faculty members and the students. A series of academic activities were organized to give students an exposer to the world of knowledge. In this regard various sociological stalwarts from esteemed universities and academic institutions visited the college on several occasions and critically reflected on various current social issues and perspectives of the contemporary society.

On 4th November 2011, the department held its annual lecture which was delivered by Professor Dipankar Gupta. Professor Gupta spoke elaborately on issues relating to Growth vs Development from the Indian context enthralling the audience by connecting a wide range of issues and facts with theoretical paradigms.

Continuing the spirit of knowledge dissemination, on 17th February 2012, the department undertook a daylong seminar under the sponsorship of UGC. The theme of the seminar was ‘Popular Culture and Social Change’. The seminar was inaugurated by Professor Emeritus Yogendra Singh, followed by other eminent speakers like Professor Biswajit Das (Jamia Milia Islamia), Professor Maitrayee Chaudhuri (Jawaharlal Nehru University), Professor Deepak Mehta (University of Delhi), Professor Renuka Singh (Jawaharlal Nehru University) and Professor Sanjay Srivastava (India Economic Growth). Students were exposed to issues ranging from the construction of the ‘new image’ of the consumers as represented through various discourses like media, television and novels to understanding the issues of legal status quo in the context of Ram Janmabhumi - Babri Masjid issues.

 In the month of October, 2011 under the placement drive initiative, the department conducted a career counselling session with Trident India Private Limited, which is an export company based in Punjab. Mr Chandra Prakash, Senior HR Manager and Ms Supriya, HR executive conducted a two hour session with the students exposing them to the field of HR.

 Apart from these, the students of the department have actively participated in several seminars and workshops that were conducted in the colleges under University of Delhi; the latest being a seminar on ‘Windows to Delhi: A City at Hundred’ by Lady SriRam College for Women, New Delhi.

Overall academically, the students have fared well in the university examinations down the years. The batch of 2010-11 passed out successfully, many of whom have had admission for higher studies in esteemed institutions in India. Chiinlalmalsawmkim and Priyambada Shah are pursuing their masters in Sociology from Delhi School of Economics while Shagufta Sabah, Malabika Rai and Pratisha Borborah have joined Jawaharlal Nehru University. Himakshi and Sangeeta have been admitted to Tejpur University for masters in Sociology. Few students have joined the social work course-- Garima Kaushik has joined Delhi School of Social Work, Sristi Puri and Adiba Jamal are both pursuing MSW from Jamia Milia Islamia while Monisha Murali is doing it from Coimbatore. Apart from them, Poornima Sinha has joined the MBA course from the ICFAI (Hyderbad).

Thus overall the department has witnessed a successful year from an academic front, though the demise of Mrs Vijayalakshmi Dewan has resulted in an irreplaceable loss for the department.
