Report 2010-11

Faculty Convener: Dr Rita Malhotra.

 We at Expressions believe in creating a platform for our budding student writers wherein they are encouraged to participate not only in Inter-College competitions but also in literary reading/writing sessions held by various organizations.

The year 2009 saw a collaboration of the society with the Embassy of Portugal, New Delhi for a programme on Indian/Portugese poetry in the Embassy premises on November 3rd 2009 as part of the literary programme “Poetry Across Cultures” initiated by Dr Rita Malhotra. Students Sonal Batra and Sanya Suri besides faculty members of Expressions were joined by other poets in a poetic dialogue with their Portugese counterparts.

 In December 2009, The cultural Centre of The Embassy of France invited Dr Rita Malhotra of Expressions to organize a literary morning of Poetry at FIRC,Delhi as part of The Festival of France in India to honour visiting  French Poet Andre Velter. Student members Shreya Sethi, Anubhuti Kapoor, Anusri Muherjee  read self-composed poems on the occasion.

 In March 2010 Expressions was invited again by the Portugese Embassy to collaborate for a poetry programme on the theme of Love. This saw fruition on the 30th of September 2010 in the Programme on “ABANDON IN LOVE” wherein Dr Rita Malhotra was the main co-ordinator and our student members Anubhuti Kapoor and Anusri Mukherjee participated  besides faculty members Dr Shiela Karki,

Ms Namita Paul, Dr Rita Malhotra and Principal Dr Minoti Chatterjee also read  poems and Dr Chatterjee gave her observations on the theme.

 On the 15th of September 2010 the Logo for Expressions was launched and to celebrate the occasion, Expressions organized  SPIN-A-YARN an Inter-College Story writing Competition.Forty particiapants from different colleges and institutions participated.We are proud to announce that our student-member Apranta created and designed the logo.Economist, Poet and Short Story Writer Dr Tanuka Endow gave a talk on the occasion.

The first term of the academic Session 2010-2011 also witnessed MIND TALK which saw our young poets read their self-composed poems. 

A special mention would be due to Ms Anubhuti Kapoor to have won many accolades (which include several firsts) at ‘Aahvaan’—Annual fest of Teri University, New Delhi, “Tarang,”  the Annual Festival of Lady Shri Ram College and at the Journalism festival at Lady Shri Ram College.

Ms Anusri Mukherjee won the 1st position at Short Story writing competition at Jesus and Mary College, the 3rd position at Essay writing competition during Ecophoria at Kamala Nehru College

And again the  1st position at Mind Talk organised by Expressions  at Kamala Nehru College

Sonal Batra, Sanya Suri, and Shreya Sethi also brought honours to the college on several occasions in poetry and short-story/prose-writing competitions organized at the Inter-college levels. 

 

 Report 2011-2012           

2011 was a very active year for Expressions. Members attended events at various colleges across campus, including at Lady Shri Ram College, Ramjas College, Jesus and Mary College, Shaheed Bhagat Singh College, Janaki Devi College, Hindu College and the Indian Institute of Planning and Management. Anubhuti Kapoor won the first position at the Creative Writing competition held during the Economics Fest at Shaheed Bhagat Singh College and Rashmi Sharma won the second position at the Creative Writing Competition held at Janki Devi Memorial College. Anindita Roy also secured the second position at Bacchanalia, the English Literature fest at Hindu College.

Under the aegis of World Poetry, Canada and in collaboration with Poetry Across Cultures and Universal Poetry, Expressions organized ‘Poetic Perceptions-A Multilingual Multicultural Evening of Poetry’ in December 2010 at India International Centre where the poetry of France, Italy, Japan, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Serbia and the USA was read. The embassies of these countries participated in the reading. The Chief Guests for the evening were His Excellency Ambassador of Serbia Jovan Mirilovic and Her Excellence Ambassador of Romania Valerica Epure. It was an enriching experience for the students and a beautiful exposure to the poetry of other lands.

Students also attended and participated in the first of the Navarasa Series of Poetry Readings, Shringhara Rasa, organised by the Poetry Society of India in August 2011, the theme of which was Monsoon/Love, and attended an evening of poetic dialogue on the theme of ‘Love, Woodshadows and Autumnal Musings’ at the India International Centre organised by the Poetry Society of India on October 2011. Expressions also organized an evening of Indian/Italian Poetry in collaboration with the Italian Cultural Centre under the aegis of Poetry Across Cultures and the Department of Germanic and Romance Studies, University of Delhi. Our faculty convener Dr Rita Malhotra coordinated all the above programs.

 It was a proud time for Expressions, as Student Convener Anubhuti Kapoor had a short story published in the collection by Chicken Soup entitled ‘Chicken Soup for the Soul- Indian College Students”.

In September 2011, students attended Creative Writing workshops at IIT-Delhi. They came away with fresh minds and exciting ideas.

 November 4 2011 marked a special date for Expressions, as we held our annual events Spin-A-Yarn, a creative writing competition, and Mind Talk, a recitation competition. Students from across the university attended these events. Ankur Dang, a member of Expressions, secured the first position in Spin-A-Yarn. Participants enjoyed the day immensely, and we look forward to next year’s events with fervour.

All in all, the year was a vibrantly bustling one, and we foresee a very interesting and engaging 2012 ahead.
