Gandhi Study Circle

Report 2010-11

Faculty Convener: Dr. Neena Bansal

Gandhi Study Circle of Kamala Nehru College was started by Dr. Sita Bimbraw (Hindi Deptt)  in 1969 to sensitize the students about Gandhiji's philosophy. Several Luminaries like Morarji Desai, Kaka Kalelkar and other close associates of Gandhiji were invited to address the students from this platform.

The Circle commenced its yearly (2010-2011) activities on November 18th 2010 with an inter-class debate competition on the " Relevance of Gandhi Today". The response was very encouraging as several students spoke for and against the motion.

On December 7th, 2010 the circle organised the screening of the film - 'Gandhi' for the first year students of Political Science Hons. and those opting 'Reading Gandhi'  as an optional paper.

In the same month , i.e. December 10, about  74 students of Political Science (H), first year visited Gandhi Bhawan and Rajghat as a part of their academic excursion activity, accompanied by 5 teachers of the college.

To commemorate the Martyr's Day, the Gandhi Study Circle organized a talk on 'Gandhi' by Dr. Ruchi Tyagi on 28th Jan 2011. The program started with the lighting of lamp, followed by prayers from different religions. Verses from Bible, Quran, Geeta and Granth Sahib were read out by our students from different departments. The program concluded with a bhajan by Dr Shrimala Jain of Commerce department. A stall put up the same day by the Khadi Gram Udyog received a very good response from the students and teachers.

An absorbing session, that overwhelmed all the students and faculty members present, was held on February 8th, 2011 in the presence of Dr. Varsha Das. Students were asked to narrate "Stories from Gandhiji's Life"  in their own words, which they had earlier prepared. About 11 students from Ist Year Political Science (H) participated in the story narrations. Dr. Varsha Das summed up the program by sharing her experiences, and influences from the life of Gandhi. The program proved a fruitful exercise as it  helped in the popularizing Gandhiji's ideas not only as an academic exercise but as a heartfelt bonding with his personality as well.

On March 8th, 2011 our college team of Sheena Aggarwal Ist year (Pol. Sc.) and Naziya Ist year (Pol. Sc.) got the 3rd prize in the Quiz Competition  organized by the Gandhi Study Circle of Gargi College on the Topic -"National Movement with special reference to the contribution of Gandhi".
